China’s greatest seafaring explorer, Admiral Zheng
He, was born in 1371, in Hedai Village, in Yunnan. He
was the second son of Ma Haji, a prominent Muslim
leader of his local southwestern Chinese community.

Growing up, Zheng He studied Islam and was very
much influenced by his father’s strong character,
great military mind and altruistic nature. Originally
named “Ma He”, his Arabic name was recorded as
Haji Mahmud Shams.
