How to Perform Eid Prayers?

The Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-up Adha Prayers consists of two raka'ah, with additional takbirs in each raka'ah.

Reported A'ishah: ‘Allah’s messenger used to say Allahu Akbar in the Eid prayers of al-Fitr and al-Adha seven times in the first rak'ah and five in the second.’
- Related by Abu Dawud, hadith No. 1,149

Below is the list on how to perform and pray the Eid Prayer step by step:

1. Intention to Pray

‘I am performing two raka’ah sunnah Eidul Fitr/Eidul Adha prayer following the Imam for Allah Ta‘ala.’

2. First Raka‘ah

The imam will start/open the prayer with the Takbiratul Ihram (the first takbir i.e. Allahu Akbar) and then follow up with 7 more Takbirs. Afterward, Al-Fatihah will be recited followed by another Surah.

3. Second Raka’ah

After you stand up, the Imam will say the first Takbir and he will repeat the Takbir 5 times. Surah Al-Fatihah will then be recited, followed by another Surah.

4. Sermon

After the prayer, the Imam will address the people with a sermon (khutbah). This can last from around 20-30 minutes. It is essential that you listen to the sermon as the Imam will address important Islamic matters.
